5 mistakes to avoid on your premium business card

Cartes de visite premium — éventail coloré

The business card remains the first tangible contact with your client. Even in the age of LinkedIn and the QR code, it is the object that ends the conversation and that people keep in their wallet. But a premium business card is about more than nice paper: the smallest design mistake is immediately noticeable. Here are the five most common mistakes we correct in the studio, and how to avoid them right from the design stage.

1. The format and paper do not match your identity

The standard 85 x 55 mm format suits most professions, but a law firm, an art gallery or a lifestyle brand can sometimes benefit from stepping outside the classic rectangle. The paper plays the same role: a glossy coated 350g/m² stock sends a radically different message from a textured ivory paper. Choose your stock in line with your positioning, not out of habit.

2. You overload the card with information

Full address, two phone numbers, three emails, social profiles, a tagline: your card becomes unreadable. Focus on the essentials. Your name, your role, a single point of contact (the right one, the one you actually check) and your website URL. The rest can be found online. A premium business card is recognised by its breathing space, not by how full it is.

3. Your typography is too fancy

You want to stand out, which is fair enough. But a decorative script or Comic Sans-style typeface does not add character, it reduces legibility. Prefer a modern sans-serif typeface for your name and a fine serif for your role. The contrast should come from weights, tracking and colours, not from typographic whims.

4. You forget the back

The back of your card is free space that you absolutely must make use of. Three options that work: a solid background in your signature colour that becomes an instantly recognisable object, a discreet graphic pattern that extends your visual world, or a short signature (a sentence that defines you in eight words at most). A blank back is a missed opportunity.

5. You overlook premium finishes

Spot varnish on the logo, hot foil stamping on your name, discreet embossing of your symbol: these finishes cost a few francs more per card, but they turn the object into something people notice, touch and comment on. In our experience, a premium card with a finish justifies 4 to 6 times its cost in brand perception by your client.
