Printing or Embroidering Textiles: Which Method Fits?

Printed hoodie with the All You Print logo in a screen printing workshop

T-shirts for your team, embroidered polos for your stand, or hoodies for your club: before you order, one question always comes up, which method should you choose? Screen printing, direct digital printing, digital transfer printing and embroidery differ in finish, coverage, durability and minimum quantity. This guide helps you choose the right textile personalisation technique for your design, your event and the number of pieces.

Four methods, four uses

The techniques on offer depend on the garment. Each product's configurator shows which methods and positions are available. In short:

  • Screen printing: perfect for simple designs in bold colours, over large areas on the front and back. On Stanley/Stella Creator 2.0 T-shirts, the print area reaches 26 x 40 cm.
  • Direct digital printing: ink is applied straight onto the cotton through fine nozzles, a little like an inkjet printer. Ideal for photos and gradients, it also covers large areas, 29 x 36 cm on the Creator 2.0.
  • Digital transfer printing: a photorealistic finish on many smaller areas, on the front, back and sleeves. It is often the method chosen for polos and sweatshirts.
  • Embroidery: your logo is worked in thread. The finish looks premium and lasts especially well, ideal for a logo, a crest or a short name.

Large designs: screen printing or direct digital printing?

For a large design on the chest or covering the whole back, choose between screen printing and direct digital printing. Both are available, for example, on Fruit of the Loom Basic men's T-shirts, Regular Fit men's T-shirts, men's long-sleeve T-shirts and Stanley/Stella Cruiser 2.0 organic cotton hoodies.

The rule of thumb: if your design has a few clearly defined colours, such as a club crest, a company logo or a slogan for a summer fair, screen printing gives you bold, solid colour on the fabric. If your design is a photo, an illustration or fine gradients, choose direct digital printing instead. It reproduces transitions and detail that individual print colours cannot achieve.

The fabric also affects the result. Regular Fit T-shirts are made from cotton with a fine surface texture that takes personalisation particularly well, and can be washed at 60°C. The women's version, in 100% cotton at 180 g/m², suits screen printing as well as photorealistic digital transfer designs. On the Fruit of the Loom women's hoodie, a special yarn improves printability. If you want organic cotton, look at Stanley/Stella and JAKO.

Logos in several places: digital transfer or embroidery?

For workwear, team clothing at a trade fair or on the shop floor, or polos in hospitality, the logo usually sits small and precise: on the left chest, on the neck or on the sleeve. Most textiles can be personalised in up to two positions, for example a company logo on the chest and a slogan large across the back, so your staff are recognisable from a distance.

Digital transfer printing also reproduces photos and fine detail. It is the method offered on JAKO Organic polos in organic cotton piqué and on Classic Stretch polos with OEKO-TEX certification. JAKO Organic sweatshirts are also finished with digital transfer printing.

Embroidery looks refined and is especially hard-wearing. Choose it, for example, on Premium Stretch polos, Basic polos, Classic women's polos (Promodoro), Promodoro, ID Identity and Fruit of the Loom hoodies, or on the Basic children's sweatshirt for your club's junior section. As a rule of thumb, digital transfer printing is the better choice for photos and gradients, embroidery for a logo with clean shapes.

Caps: embroidery, 3D embroidery or print?

On caps, embroidery takes the lead. Flexfit, Beechfield and Atlantis models can be embroidered on the front, back and sides, and on the front also in 3D embroidery, which gives the logo a raised look. Typical embroidery areas measure 10 x 5 cm on the front, 10 x 3 cm on the back and 5 x 3 cm on the side. Atlantis caps allow up to 12 thread colours, while Beechfield trucker caps with a mesh back carry the embroidery on the front panel.

For colourful logos, printed options are available too: depending on the model, digital transfer printing on the front for Flexfit and Atlantis, up to four-colour screen printing or digital transfer printing on Impact AWARE caps, and one-colour screen printing or digital transfer printing on the sustainable caps made from 100% recycled polyester. Beechfield and Atlantis caps are available from 1 piece, promotional caps from 25 pieces. Caps are especially popular in spring and summer, for sports events, company outings and open-air festivals.

Frequently asked questions about textile printing

What lasts longer, print or embroidery?

Embroidery is considered especially long-lasting and hard-wearing, which is why it is the first choice for polos, hoodies and caps worn every day. Also check the fabric: Regular Fit T-shirts and JAKO Organic sweatshirts, for example, can be washed at 60°C.

Can I print a photo on a T-shirt?

Yes. Direct digital printing suits photos over large areas, and digital transfer printing suits photos on smaller areas. Screen printing and embroidery are made for logos and text with clean blocks of colour.

What is the minimum quantity for personalised textiles?

It depends on the model and sometimes on the method. Regular Fit T-shirts and JAKO Organic T-shirts are available from 1 piece, Slim Fit women's T-shirts and many polos from 5 pieces. For the Basic women's V-neck T-shirt, the minimum is 1 or 50 pieces depending on the personalisation method.

Can I see a sample before ordering?

Yes, for Basic, Budget and Premium men's T-shirts, you can order unprinted samples. This lets you check the size, colour and comfort before you have the whole run personalised.

Colours, print files and ordering

The base colour of the fabric affects the printed shade and can cause slight variations. If your logo is defined in HKS or Pantone solid colours, the details appear in the spec sheet shown after configuration. Where possible, supply logos as vector files and photos at high resolution. The price in CHF is shown instantly in the configurator, so you can compare methods, positions and quantities straight away.

Keep the season in mind too: polos and hoodies are especially popular in autumn, for trade fairs, company events and end-of-year team gifts, T-shirts and caps in spring for sports events and summer fairs. The delivery time is shown before you order, and we deliver across Switzerland, from Basel to Chur and from Geneva to St. Gallen.
